Parking spaces at Kahului Airport have been reduced due to reconstruction of the public parking lot and work on the consolidated rental car facility, the state Department of Transportation Airport Division said Friday.
The parking lot reconstruction work involves relocating employee parking. About 200 parking spaces will become available Sept. 1, with the completion of half of the last phase of the public parking lot reconstruction.
When completed, the entire parking lot — including a partitioned area that was used for airport employees — will be available for general parking. Airport employee parking will be at the rental car facility and in a lot near the commuter terminal and air cargo areas, airport officials said.
Work on the three-story rental car facility began in April 2016. The 1.3 million-square-foot building covers roughly 19 acres and will contain rental car company offices, customer-service counters and nearly 4,500 parking stalls (3,800 for rental car companies and 700 for employee parking).
The Transportation Department encourages travelers to arrive early to find parking, get dropped off at the airport, carpool or schedule another method of transportation.
